What are most films made of?

Window film is composed of alternating layers of a polyester polymer and a laminating adhesive. Depending on the specific type of film, the polyester layer may be dyed, metalized, coated with an ultra violet inhibitor, or simply added for additional strength.

Dyes are added to give the film is characteristic color. Dyes also work to reduce the amount of heat entering a room by absorbing some of the light. A broad variety of dyed films are available to ensure that one will match your specific need.

The metalized coating is the heart of the films efficiency. Various methods of metalizing have been developed to guarantee that a uniform layer is distributed onto the polyester layer. The metalized layer reflects light and heat back into it's incidnet direction. The release liner protects the pressure sensitive adhesive from exposure prior to it's application onto the glass surface.

Causes of fading

How are light, heat, and fading related?

Light by itself is not heat. Light is converted into heat when it is absorbed by a substance, such as clothing, carpet, or furniture. Light is not converted into heat if it is reflected. The most efficient window films are reflective because rather than convert light into heat, they simply reflect it back to its source.

There is a common misconception that ultra violet light causes fading and that by eliminating ultra violet light fading will stop. The fact is that there are many sources of fading. Ultra violet light is about 40% responsible for fading. Visible light and heat also contribute significantly to fading. Eliminating ultra violet light certainly reduces fading. To further reduce fading, heat and visible light may be reduced.

Security against crime

Penetration and tear-resistant to deter smash-and-grab crimes. Since time and stealth are vital, thieves usually give up quickly. Vandalism could be limited to replacing a glass plate. Property inside may not be as exposed for further vandalism, theft or increased damage from weather.

Safety against injury

Reduces the chance of serious injury caused by flying debris from storms or by people falling or running into glass doors or windows.

Protection against violent weather.

Even if windows or glass doors are smashed, the film offers increased protection against flying shards of glass, debris, wind and water.
